Knee injuries SUCK…

So now, I think it’s been about 10 weeks now since I first injured myself. I’ve been to see a Doc 3 times about it, each of which they’ve told me, nothing is really wrong, and that rest is all I really need. Since then, i’ve been to see an ‘Osteopath’ twice; who also specializes in Sports Injury – among other things.

The Osteopath was an experience. I’ve never met a guy like him, honestly – it was like he had a sixth sense. He did some things that seemed odd, and certainly said things that shocked me. None-the-less, after two sessions, he came to the conclusion he probably cannot help me. All is not lost however, because unlike the doctor, he did see able to confidently offer diagnosis of my knee problems.

Some form of Posterior Cruciate Ligament damage. The extent of it, cannot really be said, of course from just mauling my knee around. Which is where I’m at now. After my last session, which was on Thursday, he said I need to get another appointment with the Doc (which is for today!) and hopefully get him to take it more seriously this time. He suggests that the main way forward now, would be for me to have an MRI scan on my knee, to see the state of the ligament internally and go from there. I have to admit gradually it is feeling slightly better, but it’s still tentative and I couldn’t risk doing any major twists with knee…

The knee, as you can see is a complicated joint indeed….

It’s suggested that the PCL (Posterior…) is actually more UNCOMMONLY damaged than it’s partner, the Anterior Cruciate Ligament. The two, as you can see work together, and apparently the PCL is stronger, among other things, so it is far less common.

“The PCL is twice as strong as the ACL. It contains a larger cross-sectional area and possesses a higher tensile strength, explaining its lower rate of injury. The PCL fibers are oriented more vertically than the more oblique fibers of the ACL.”

However I did read that it is usually coupled with the feeling of dislocation of the knee, which is what I did experience. I am a little discouraged to read, however…

“In some cases the PCL may only be partially torn or in more serious cases the PCL may be completely torn. Unfortunately the PCL does not have the ability to completely heal once it is injured.”

I need my knee to regain its former self, so I can enjoy the sports and fitness level I once I had. If not, I don’t even know what I’ll do. Hopefully I’ll find out more, after seeing the doctor today. Fingers crossed i’ll be put up for an MRI scan so I know exactly what the problem REALLY is… Bad or good, I don’t care – the uncertainty is actually killing me.

I did, on Friday go for a run, only about 6 miles though, but DAMN! After dropping 3 or 4 matches a week, down to doing pretty much my job and that’s it, my fitness has dropped massively… I was struggling after this little run, and all this weekend my legs, all over have been feeling VERY achy. It’s not something I am used to. Yet this leaves me strangely positive in that, it must of meant I was pretty damn fit prior to this injury – one thing to smile about at least?!!?

should you be running on your bad knee. why don’t you do something low impact.

Well, yes and no. Not really, though I am allowed to do the linear motion, so it’s kind of OK. You’re right, I probably should do something with less impact – some people say I should swim. Unfortunately I don’t like swimming really – i can’t use my iPod then!! But ultimately I want to regain my fitness, even today, my legs still are feeling a little painful, amazing how your fitness can change in a SMALL space of time! 8)

But Steve .. if you try and do stuff on it, will get worse. Swimming (can you just not listen to your ipod for an hour?!) is a great idea, biking, etc. LOW IMPACT should be your moto!

Good luck with it! Seriously .. :D

Steve, you have a bad knee and you went and did a 6 mile jog? You deserve pain for that, do you not take into consideration the fact you may be causing more injury?

I currently have shin splints, this is coming off a wrist injury and knuckle injury, so my running is off the list. I just got in from work because I couldnt move, haha. I can still do weights and pad work and light bag work as long as I dont move around too much.

How did you hurt your knee?
