WWDC – The Aftermath…

So with time to reflect, what of Apple’s announcements then? Should they be taunting Microsoft and it’s Vista ‘project’, after announcing Leopard? Many think not, and to be totally honest I don’t blame them. One or two interesting points have been raised, in and around the web, most notably the rather quiet news that Mac OS X, Leopard will now ship sometime in Q1, 2007. Sites around the web have quoted Apple, or maybe even Steve Jobs himself as saying Leopard was scheduled for Q4,2006. Whilst this is a little frustrating for Mac users, and maybe Mac developers too, I’d personally say that, well…

“…That’s nothing, compared to the pain, angst and suffering Windows users have endured since Windows XP, in 2001″

I cannot really give my sincerest views on Leopard, post WWDC, because the Quicktime feed remains blocked up with traffic, so my views only stem from hard written comments and news, plus Apple’s very own ‘Leopard Sneak Peak’.

If you break down the 10 things Apple had to offer, yesterday, how many are compelling to you? Personally, ‘Time Machine’ *IS* a big deal, iChat features some really nice enhancements i’d make use of, and Mail the same – though now I have the power of Google Calendar and Notebook, I no longer ‘need’ a desktop equivalent. Beyond those said features, and the prospect of ‘Core Animation’ I fear Leopard at this stage is falling a little short.

BUT, and this is a big one…

WWDC06 - Top Secret

…after Bertand’s comparision between Vista and Tiger, maybe Apple are holding their power-play cards, a little closer to their chest for now. With Vista likely to slip once more, maybe it’s a good strategy for Apple to retain some of the innovation, for when Microsoft are really at a point of no return… Who knows, but one thing is for sure… I’ll be getting Leopard regardless, and for the Windows customers out there… I hope you someday get Vista…

…TOO. :)
