eMusic, Apple’s iTunes and DRM…
On the eve of Apple’s most recent announcement, named ‘showtime’ I stumbled upon BBC’s Newsnight, which too was speaking about Apple’s event, earlier this evening. For those out of the loop, Apple introduced revised iPod nano’s, Shuffles, greater capactity for the 5G iPod as well as iPod games.
…Oh! and one more thing. iTunes movie downloads.
As speculated, Apple today introduced support for movie downloads for it’s iTunes (also updated today to version 7) software, as well as of course iPod. The new movie downloads, all from the Disney empire are avaliable to US Citizens featuring ‘near DVD quality’ video. From my own reckoning, it did appear however that the content was released in an improved 640×480 format, up from 320×240 for earlier iTunes video content. With that said, it appears; in my mind at least to leave doubt, whether or not we’ll see a larger iPod device, working on a 16:9 screen ratio. Surely it wouldn’t make sense?
Moving back onto Newsnight, they happened to mention a new service which launched today, from a UK music, aptly named ‘eMusic‘. They’re vision is fairly simple; solve the problem of compatibility with regards to music and where we can play said content. How are they doing this? Seemingly offering content from indie artists who also support the initiative in the ultra compatible format that is mp3. Nobody can deny that locking yourself into iTunes/iPod and so forth could and does cause potential headache. Be it because of the need to change to an alternative source, or because of computer authorizations or most commonly of all, not wanting to use an Apple portable device.
eMusic may not be up there with Apple, and it’s motley crew, but what it does offer is an outlet for artists keen to share their music, make some money and keep a smile on everybodies faces. Why not check out eMusic, featuring over 1,000,000 songs, and a free trial offering 25 free songs.
