Google updates ‘Google Reader’
For the few of you, who have realized the power of RSS, and happen to read this blog, this mayb be of interest to you. I’ve been using Google Reader to manage my RSS subscriptions for months, both inside my Google Homepage on my cell phone (manage your Google Homepage for mobile, here) and of course as a standalone application, here.
The great thing about this is, my feeds are accesible, they are always at my command when I want to catch up with them. Whilst this is great, one or two features were missing from the web app, one being ‘Mark all as read’. Of course, the idea is for you to read your RSS, yes that would correct. However when you’re away for 2 weeks, coming back to read OLD news, for the sake of marking them read, was annoying. This is no longer the issue, off the back of a brand new look for Google Reader. It’s a fair bit different from before, and the biggest quarn I just noticed, is now fixed. I’ve only this second noticed the upgrade, so other gems are yet to be uncovered, but I guess i’ll be preaching about them, in due course.
It’s been a good week, for folks like me, relying on Google to manage my notes, calendar, feeds (and much more…). Google added enhancements to the Calendar, which added ‘web site events’ among other niceties. That one feature alone looks like it could be VERY handy indeed, given the context, especially as Google offers’ API’s and isn’t shy to let us play with their creations. Notebook, also took a step forward this week, allowing collaboration on notebooks, which is greatfully received. Equally is the Google Homepage widget, which is fits very nicey next to Calendar, Reader, Gmail, Bookmarks etc. For folks using FireFox and wanting to strip out quotes, code or anything other, I really recommend Google Notebook. Google created an Add-on that allows you to highlight text, and send it to the toolbar version of notebook, where you have full read/write access to your notes. It’s very convenient, and super easy to then get to your content, and continue making note.
Google makes my life easier, using a variety of web apps, if you spend alot of time on the web, you ought to check out their whole host of apps. Not sure how many, or what is avaliable? Ask, I should work for Google…

Hmm… I don’t have IE to hand right now, to take a look at it in that.. Are you sure? Have you tried clearing your internet cache, for both browsers?

I’ve been using ‘Google Reader’ for a while now and I’m not sure if I like the updated version. The old one was a lot simpler to use imo.
However, it is true that the ‘Mark Read’ option was long overdue and I’m glad they implemented that.

I know what you mean Cat. I think I need to get familar with the hot keys. It feels a little ‘complicated’ now, before I used to click on the feed titles until I got to something interesting. Now? Well… It takes more thinking to do that… Hmmm…
You *CAN* revert via the options, if you want to.
