A whole lot of Wii…

So a couple of buddies came over, and even my dad decided to jump into hours upon hours of Wii Saturday night, which ran over til 3.30am Sunday too. After messing around in Wii Play for a while (Fishing surprisingly went down well, but I think drink aided this!?), we took a quick look at what was avalable in Virtual Console. Being a huge Xbox 360 gamer, I was expecting a similar kind of experience here, and in many ways it was. You buy Wii Points in the same way you would Microsoft Points, and payments are made in a similar fashion. On the downside, you can’t really preview these games, there’s small images left more it appears to jog your memory than anything else. The pages themselves, seem quite slow to load, far slower than on the Xbox 360.

Good virtual console games? I would say, not really, there were a couple of games that had me interested, firstly the fact that N64 games are on there, is surprising and also pleasing. Since launch only Mario 64 has been avaliable, I might pick it up, maybe. The other game I was interested in, was Bomberman ’93, which features 1-5 player multiplayer. Folks over the age of 18 will most definietly remember this game, which is Bomberman at it’s best. The multiplayer features 8 arena’s and allows you to play with 5 players, which can be human or AI controlled. This game alone, kept us busy for a couple of hours, it was such a good laugh – maybe more because I think I won all but one game?! I’ve read Nintendo suggesting there’s a tidy 30+ releases due on Virtual Console 1st quarter including Mario Kart 64, that should be a definite buy! :)

We then moved, inevitably into Wii Sports, where the time really did fly. Started with Golf, but only lasted a few holes, where it was more than apparent it was too serious, and too slow for a party of people to sit through. After a bit of Tennis and a couple of accidents (people batting each other! :P ), Bowling then set in, which was a whole lot of fun, it surely is the most user friendly game of the bunch.

One particular highlight though was playing Golf with a handicap – having to stroke the ball, using a fishing/casting like motion. That was amusing! :P I still wonder, should I have had WarioWare? hmm….

I played the Wii for the first time last night at the Xbox House Party, oddly everyone that attended the party wanted to play the Wii more than the Xbox 360. I’ve got to say that I’ve never really had some much fun with a console. I managed to play Wii Sports which was a lot of fun, I nearly hit someone with the controller and smashed a lamp :P

So do you have your own Wii now then dude? I have to say I really do enjoy playing amongst friends on it, it’s taken over from playing 3 or 4 player Pro Evo/FIFA on Xbox 360, easily. :)

A friend of mine brought the Wii down for the party. I’m still waiting on Nintendo to send me a Wii.

They released a few new games recently. Zelda: a link to the past should be out soon but is avialable in the US now. Street fighter II (the original) is something that tempted me but meh. Got it for the snes. What i really want is a VC controller.

I am not so fussed about a controller, I don’t actually mind using the Wii-Mote for Bomberman, at least. Is it a bit crappy for other titles, then?

I don’t know, but its not compatible with all the VC titles. You can still use GC controllers for most of these games though.
