Mac Apps…

As someone who works exclusively on Apple Mac’s (all running Leopard too), i’ve come to love things endless things about the platform, but there’s certainly something to said about ‘Mac Apps’. To Windows users, it’ll probably be considered laughable to suggest there’s really much of a difference, but I think in some apps it’s fairly noticeable. It’s like User Experience is more carefully crafted, resulting in a more pleasing, fulfilling application. I think this is well illustrated inside Apple’s mobile OS X platform on the iPhone, where User Experience is clearly king.

Applications like CoverSutra, Coda, Delicious Library, Pixelmator, to name a few all represent a rich, tidy and enjoyable user interface which appears to add value to overwise simple tasks. I think instances like this, are apart of what makes Mac user’s passionate about their platform. Occasionally I hop onto a colleagues machine to tinker with code, and alike and there are so many things I miss from the Mac, some really stupidly minor things to, for example:

  • When you have a document open which has been revised since the last save, the red close button has a small circle inside it, to denote this. I don’t have to know whether i’ve saved since my last revision or not, it’s just ‘there’.
  • Visual Cues on keyboard shortcuts – I love how when I copy some text, the Edit menu will flash to visually let me know the text has been clipped to the clipboard
  • Exposé – How many Mac users have moused to the hot corner on Windows, only to be let down? I hate having to manage my Windows, on Windows.
  • Quick Look – Prior to Leopard I wasn’t sold on this at all, but now I really don’t think I could live without it. Hopping through files to find the right one is a breeze. Quick Looking through Mail attachments is especially pleasing and useful…
  • I could go on forever… I might continue at some point…
